I attended a few Baptist services when I was in my early 20s. Throughout the service, everyone joyfully stood hands raised, shouting “Amen,” and singing “Hallelujah!” It was the most fun I ever had at church. I was brought up Catholic, so I wasn’t used to people speaking let alone moving in the pews; and no one ever dared to sing over the blue-haired ladies, whose vocals had graduated to a perfect ear-piercing pitch.
I no longer affiliate with a religion, so I don’t attend a church. Instead, I reflect when I’m alone on the trail, and when I’m home or in my car, music provides the sermon. I have a playlist on Spotify containing songs specifically for when I need to be reminded how beautiful, and forgiving, life can be.
The song, “My Church,” by Maren Morris wonderfully describes the impact music can have on your soul. I sing along with the energy of a southern choir, imagining myself a kid at church, soulfully calling for an “Amen,” and singing “Hallelujah,” while the blue-haired ladies look on with astonishment.
